Topics included:
1) Define and discuss stress vs. urge incontinence, including a brief review of the pelvic floor muscles (PFM’s) and the pelvic diaphragm.
2) Discuss the main factors that influence incontinence: postural alignment, core stability, hip strength, hip flexibility, pelvic floor muscle activation and relaxation.
3) Discuss the role of the nervous system as it relates to incontinence.
4) Discuss how the popular “Kegel” exercises can potentially exacerbate many incontinence issues!
5) Participate in a fun and inspiring yoga practise as described below:
A) Demonstrate breathing methods (pranayama) and meditation techniques as they relate to incontinence, particularly focusing on the importance of releasing PFM’s.
B) Discuss and demonstrate the correct method of pelvic floor muscle (PFM) control (activation and deactivation), incorporating physical therapy PFM strengthening exercises, pilates, and yoga asanas that address this method.
